Judges Choice

Each judge has provided us with thier choice along with a description of why.

oneway

A One Way Ticket by Snowpuppies - This is one of the delightful things about being a judge. It’s finding the stories you mightn’t normally come across in your day-to-day gander of the journal. Take this story, for example. A pairing that I might not normally have seen, and to be honest, mightn’t have read (for Connor). But this author managed to obliterate any misgivings I’ve held with the skill of her storytelling, and exceptional attention to character. Her Faith was so very Faith, believable in every sense; her story as a whole equally convincing. I found this story to be refreshing, surprising, told with confidence and wit and all manner of wickedness. One word: Brilliant.

across

Across the Pond by Polgara – I didn't expect to like this, since Draco isn't usually my cup of tea.  But I loved the letter format, and the fact that you didn't try and make Draco a likeable guy right away.  Your characterization of Dawn is brilliant, and the transitions between narrative and letters are not at all jarring like they could have been.

bitter

Bitter Truth by Jakl - The imagination jAkL has used to explain many aspects of the Council and why they do the things they do, using Quentin Travers perspective, is brilliant and insightful. This short story makes you put yourself in the head of the Council's shoes and even feel for him, if only a little. The surprise ending will have any reader running through every emotion as the heartache for Buffy unfolds. A must read in my opinion!

glass

Breaking Glass by Antennapedia - There are so few Giles/Ethan stories and even fewer that manage to stay in character. Oftentimes Ethan is demonized or Giles becomes an indecisive, almost feminine version of himself, prey to Ethan’s magic and wiles. This story, however, avoids all of those traps and fleshes out Ethan in a believable and interesting way. This is a love story, and even though we know the unhappy ending, the characters are so sympathetic and so realistically drawn that the reader cannot help but enjoy the time these two have together. A wonderful story about my favorite rare couple.

cakes

Cakes and Heroes by only_passenger - The epitome of the relationship between Xander and Buffy.  Often mistreated, maligned, deemed incomprehensible, and/or celebrating with enthusiastic glee bordering on mania, this simple drabble deftly explains their complicated relationship in all of its complexity and sweetness.

capt

Captivated by NatuiBitz - This has been one of my favorite fics for years. I love the dynamic between the two. The author manages to make believable something that is completely out of canon. Not an easy thing to do. This is porn WITH plot, and great fun to read.

Chaos

Chaos Theory by Rainne - Not being a big Buffy shipper, I don't read a lot of fic with Buffy as a main character.  One of the biggest reasons why is that seldom do authors do the character any justice.  Chaos Theory by Rainne is stunningly different.  This Buffy is older, more mature, wiser.  And, at the same time, she's a time-worn, tired, and, not surprisingly, not so friendly.  Her quips are few and far between.

This Buffy feels true to me.  What with Willow still not controlling her magic (causing the death of Dawn), a falling out with Giles, and a junior slayer to raise; this is the Buffy that could have been.  The way she works with Kate--shares with Kate—is simply Right.

I never saw the end of BtVS as “happily ever after”; this story gives me an interesting and well-crafted glimpse of what might have been.

comp

Compelled to Play the Great Game by HotPoint – I didn’t think I would care for this series when I began it.  I have never been a fan of Illyria … but from the first few chapters I was hooked.  The plot is so incredible unique and interesting – Illyria travels back to BTVS S 7 in order to shape the world more to her liking.  This is one of the most incredible time travel pieces I have ever read.  The characterizations are amazing, the cast of characters draw me in, and I find myself rooting for both the Buffy and Scooby gang in this newly shaped world.

The series in an epic – each story has at least 100,000 words and this particular story is the fourth book.  The story line keeps involving and captivates my attention.  Enyo, an original character, is truly outstanding and an amazing character.  Her interactions with Faith, Wesley, and Illyria are fun and witty, while her adversarial relationship with Buffy is extremely fun to read.  I enjoy the characters in this fourth book, the relationships which have evolved from the first book, and the world which we now find ourselves in by this time is both thrilling and terrifying!

An excellent read, highly recommended to anyone who enjoys ensemble pieces and time travel stories.  This is one story which you will not regret reading and will have you craving more!

danger

Dangerous by Addie Logan - I love this story because, from start to finish, it is a delicious, captivating tale with very well planned and executed elements.  The reader becomes lost in the story of Connor and Anne right away, and is treated to a wonderful and romantic adventure.

def

Defender of the Earth by Uncaged Muse - I have found it very hard to find a good Doctor Who story, let alone a crossover.  This fic made my heart sing!  It was rich and definitely made with attention and care to the characters, which truly made it a satisfying, warm read.

fam

Family Bonds by Kimalis - A first time writer, Kimalis has burst onto the Spander scene with this wonderfully gripping and sexy tale of Spike and Xander.  Her plot shines and the sex sizzles.  If this is her first effort, I truly can’t wait for what she comes up with next!

floren

Florence Fucking Nightingale by sahiya - While this is not a pairing I would normally read, after I started, I just fell in love with this fic. Faith’s obvious desire to run showed off her flaws that we could see even when she first appeared on the show but happily she resisted the desire and returned to help Giles, showing her growth beyond what we expected from her. Your skittish Faith was very much in character and came across very real to me. At the same time a pitiful, sick Giles who hates not being able to fend for himself or ask for assistance also echoed from what we know of him. I really felt for both characters, their faults and flaws as well as their strengths and loyalty and love for each other.

forward

Forward to Time Past by Unbridled Brunette - I found the detailed exploration of how William became Spike engrossing and authentic; the characterizations ring true.   Immaculately written, too.

god

Godless Provenance by Lisette - Fit best with the SG characters, well written, good fic.

hero

Hero's Reward by pfeifferpack - Because Kathleen always does Joss one better and gives us a peek at how it SHOULD have been!!!

his

His Way by Dreamweaver - I'm a Spuffy girl, no excuses.  And this is just delightful.  I was wary at first that it was another 'go back and fix things' story that would follow the same old line, but it it didn't.  Spike was so on character and Buffy didn't kick and bite as I expected – thankfully!  The intimacy was great, and HOT!  All in all, I loved it; only problem – I wanted more.

hold me

Hold Me Down by Wesley's Girl - Wesley's Girl spins a believable tale of a Xander that's making a muck of his life "post-Anya" and a Spike that tries to pick him up and dust him off, in typical Spike fashion – very grudgingly, of course – with lots of snark and not a lot of pity. The dialogue is snappy and the story moves forward with just the right pacing. Wesley's Girl doesn't sugar coat the Spike/Xander pairing; you'll not find hearts and flowers, or even words of undying love. But there's a definite softening of attitudes, or realizations, and just maybe…

hunt

Hunter/Hunted by vikingprincess and adarkershade_x - It is a brilliant and original idea and it sucks you in hard and fast, the characterizations are perfect and it is utterly gripping.. really loved it

hell

Hellraiser: The Angels Beneath by Suki Blue - The concept and originality made for a fascinating and irrestible read.

slay

Slayer Memories by Hello_Spikey - Dana made such a brief appearance in the show, but the idea of a damaged slayer, who could not differentiate between reality and the shared memories and visions of her calling, was really compelling.  Hello_Spikey brought this character center stage in Slayer Memories, getting into Dana's head in a moving, believable way.  The fact that her broken memories drive the entire plot is very original, and the sections from her point of view realistically track from endearing to frightening and everywhere in between.  Buffy's relationship with Dana is very interesting to read, not only when they connect, but also when they cannot seem to understand each other, no matter how hard they try.  In the final chapters, the interactions between all of the characters were pitch perfect, culminating in an open ending that left me wanting more.

solid

Solidarity by dark_amia - Remarkably well written, Solidarity takes us on a journey of hardships and trauma, love and loyalty where our vampires find that bit of happiness in what they are and not what they have been or could be.  I was awed by the depth of emotion captured, at turns leaving me with laughter on my lips or wringing my hands with fear.  The LA gang is rightly more appreciative with regard to Spike better qualities and he finally reaps the benefits of a family where trust and true affection are abundant.  All the characters are spot on and the plot is original without being pretentious.  The twists and turns do leave your heart jumping so be ready for that.  All and all a fantastic read!

heart

The Man Who Stole the Heart of William the Bloody by darkhavens - Unique, innovative, creative. True originality in our loved and well-used fandom.

un

UnExpected by Amerie - Unexpected was the first fic I’d read while judging this round that wasn’t finished and actually had me begging for more.  Usually I’m ok with the fact that something’s not finished and move on.  With this one, I've been checking almost on a daily basis for updates.  A while ago I had to resign myself to the fact that I no longer had time to seek out and read good fan fic, what with real life stuff and my own writing.  Since I’ve finished judging, I have to admit that I’ve reread the fic twice and will probably again before the summer is out.  Thanks for writing such an entertaining piece of fiction.
